🎯 The business: a trailer, a strong back and a phone number people can find. You haul away what the garbage truck will not take, and you resell, donate or recycle about half of it. Demand never stops, because people never stop moving, downsizing and dying.
Homeowners clearing a garage, realtors and estate attorneys emptying a house, landlords after an eviction, and contractors who need a debris run. Pricing is by trailer volume: a quarter load around $150, a full load $450 to $650, plus surcharges for mattresses, tires and appliances. Estate cleanouts are the big tickets, often $1,500 and up.
| Used dump trailer, 12 to 14 feet | $6,000 to $9,000 |

| LLC, license, liability and auto insurance | $1,500 |
| Dollies, straps, gloves, tarps | $400 |
| Vehicle lettering and a Google Business profile | $500 |
| All-in | ≈ $8,000 to $12,000 with a truck you already own |
Learn your county dump’s rates and hours; tipping fees are your biggest cost and they vary wildly. Set a volume price sheet with photos of what a quarter, half and full load look like. Introduce yourself to five realtors and two estate attorneys. Take before-and-after photos of every garage; they sell better than any ad.
A $500 full load takes two people about two hours plus the dump run, with a tipping fee of $60 to $150. Three loads a day is about $1,500 of revenue, and the resale side (tools, furniture, scrap metal) adds a few hundred a week once you have a buyer list. Two trucks and a dispatcher is where it becomes a company rather than a job.
A business license and commercial auto insurance. Hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, refrigerants, asbestos) has its own rules and most haulers refuse it. Some states require a waste-hauler permit for commercial debris; check the county. Appliances with refrigerant need certified handling.
Backs and knees. A customer’s “small pile” is a hoarder house. Dump fees rise and your price sheet lags. The trailer gets a flat on the highway with a full load. The ones who last charge properly for stairs and heavy items and do not race the big franchise on price.
